Three Flying Ducks

Three flying ducks is about the art of collection and how tchotchkes, while cheap and mass produced, play a role in making collection more accessible. While not all collections require money, such as collecting used packaging for snacks, worn out shoes, and expired stamps, many others such as fine art, wine, and geodes were long inaccessible to average people. The creation of the collection also makes it more satisfying to collect as there is an achievable end goal, it is possible to complete a collection unlike many other types of collections.

Robert Opie collected food packaging and other one you items gathering them through childhood now having an estimated 500000 items. These items fill his home, a storehouse, museums, and exhibition spaces. His made a business out of this selling and renting his objects to film productions and selling books about his collection.

Collectors tend to be women but generally men tend to get sucked into their collections. The single minded focus and drive to dominate and feel successful that patriarchal societies have driven into men up to this point is a factor they contributes to this statistic. While this is not wholly a bad thing as many advancements that are made are made by individuals who think and act this way, but at the same time it has lead to wars and through them come these advancements.

Werner Von Braun who founded the American space program also built rockets for Nazi germany to bomb London, and in bother cases his work consumed him, causing him to seclude himself.

Alex shear is an example of someone who has gotten absorbed into his collection, to rediscover “American innocence” through objects with character. Having many types of connections and collecting toys he used to play with. His marriage fell apart, he lost friends but he is still dedicated

With over 100000 objects in multiple warehouses he collects and salvages things from flea markets, including defective or failed merchandise as he believes these are just as important as successful products. Especially from big companies who would rather consumers forget their shortcomings. While he is successful it came at the cost of many connections.

Cao Fei

Impactful, Freeing

Cao Fei studies human expression, and more specifically the expression of the people in China and how they are influenced by other cultures. She explains the importance of western influence as well as influence from other Asian countries in how the people of China express themselves such as through dance and cosplay. She then goes on to talk about online games that give people virtual lives that they can use to further express themselves in ways that they may otherwise be unable to in their normal life. Her project RMB city is a way for her to express herself and allow others to express themselves politically by forming a virtual democracy in a city she designed. It is full of fun structures like a giant spinning bicycle wheel, a shopping basket with buildings inside of it, and flaming smokestacks. The structure of the city itself allows for social commentary on the developments of cities and businesses while also creating a space where people can enact their political ideas in a safe space.

From looking at the piece there is a lot to take in at once, but depending on what angle one views it from one object can grab your attention more than another. In the first image the fire is the first thing my eye is drawn to as its bright colors and smoke sort of alarm a viewer, while in the second it is the flag for the bright red as well as it being isolated in the photo. The main island with all the buildings is fairly cohesive and well put together which helps bring emphasis to the outliers which stick out either by composition, form, color, or any combination of those things.

 There is a lot to be inspected in each photo with some things seemingly being creative expression with others seeming to have a deeper meaning.

A Few of My Favorite Things

 

1. Sketchbook: My sketchbooks are very important to me as not only do I have fun drawing in them and creating things that I am proud of, but its also nice to look back to only see the things I've made that I am still proud of but to also see how far I've come.

2. My DS and 3DS: These are my two favorite gaming devices that I used throughout elementary and high school respectively. They have some of my favorite games even to this day that I still go back and play every so often.

3. Dice: Since going to college I have gotten into Dungeons and Dragons a lot and is one of the things that I could write, draw, play, and rant about for hours. 

4. Comic: In the last few years I've been buying comics not only because they are fun to read, but they also inspire my writing and drawing as I will take notes on the things I liked and disliked about them so I can apply that knowledge to what I create.

5. Earbuds: Lastly are my earbuds which I use all the time whether I'm writings, drawing, doing homework, riding my bike, doing chores, and even while I worked (my boss allowed me to). I like many genres of music, but one that I have recently gotten into is metal (unfortunate).
